1. A ride to the doctor, dialysis, or the pharmacy

If you have Medicaid, these rides are free. Medicaid pays for rides to covered medical appointments — the doctor, dialysis, treatment, therapy, even the pharmacy — when you have no other way to get there. It's called Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT). Book ahead when you can.

Missouri (MO HealthNet) — free medical rides

If you have Missouri Medicaid, call MTM to set up a ride to a covered appointment. Call at least 5 days ahead when you can; urgent rides and hospital discharges can be arranged 24/7.

Kansas (KanCare) — free medical rides

If you have Kansas Medicaid (KanCare), rides are arranged through your health plan. Use the number on the back of your KanCare card, or call your plan directly:

2. Getting to work, a job interview, or an appointment

United Way 211 connects you to local agencies that can help with a gas voucher or bus tickets to get to work, a job interview, or an appointment. Help is usually available up to twice in 12 months, as funds allow — so ask early.

3. Riding the bus (RideKC)

RideKC — routes, trip planning & fares

RideKC runs buses across the Kansas City metro on both sides of the state line. Call to plan a trip or find your route, and ask about reduced fares if you're a senior, have a disability, or are on a low income.

4. If a disability keeps you from using the bus

RideKC Freedom — door-to-door paratransit

For people who can't use the regular fixed-route bus because of a disability. RideKC Freedom and Freedom On-Demand offer door-to-door rides across Johnson County, Wyandotte County, Kansas City, and Independence. You need a paratransit account; call to get started or to book a trip.
