If you live in Kansas City, Missouri and your landlord is suing you to evict you, you have a right to a free lawyer. This program is also called Right to Counsel — same program, same intake, so you only need to apply once.

Applying online is fastest. The phone number below is the United Way 211 intake operator, not a law office — say you are being sued for eviction and asking for Right to Counsel. A lawyer is assigned after intake.

Ask what it costs and who qualifies when you call. We have not confirmed either, so do not assume it is free. Their expungement page was erroring on our last check, so use the phone or email rather than the website form.

The UMKC Expungement Clinic closed and is not taking cases. Their site still has eligibility information and a step-by-step guide for filing a Missouri expungement without an attorney, which is why we still link it — but its front page and its intake form were not updated, so ignore anything there that offers to take your case.

Filing usually costs about $175 (roughly $125 court filing plus $50 service fees). You can ask the court to waive it — the fee-waiver motion is form GN10 and it is included in their forms packet.
